Applications of Foam Colloids in Your House

It is only the weight of foam colloids that is low. Their applications are much larger than life – the best example is certainly the cup of coffee you are holding in your hand right now. A colloid is defined technically as an intermediate stage between any two of the three physical states viz. solid, liquid & gas. Solid foam intermediates a solid & a gas while liquid foam represents an intermediate between a liquid and a gases.

Foams are very much versatile in their fabrication. Depending on the need, they can be rolled soft and thin or thick and stiff. Liquid foams vary in their strengths depending on the ratio of gas to liquid.

Solid foams find multiple applications, both domestic and industrial. They are used for preparing coffee cups, as cushion fillings, as (hard) fillings in mattresses. Liquid foams are used as surfactants or even in whipped creams.

Using Open or Closed Cell Foams for Insulation

Foam insulation has nowadays become a widely applicable technique for multiple domestic & industrial purposes. However, one must choose the right type of foam, and more importantly, a good installer having ample previous knowledge about the same. Open cell spray foam is a much environment friendly option; however, it has a low R (Insulation or resistance) value and is impermeable to air (though permeable to moisture). The closed cell spray foam in impermeable to both air & moisture, has a higher R value, but is more costly. Also, it uses hydro fluorocarbons for the purpose of blowing.

It is necessary to check the depth of the target area to be insulated. A closed spray will work fine for smaller spaces and an open one for comparatively larger target areas. Do not spray an open cell foam in places which are prone to come in contact with water. Avoid using closed sprays for wooden areas.
